Who Steps Up After Kayvon Webster’s Departure?

Kayvon Webster signed a 2 year deal that reunited him with Wade Phillips in LA. How will the Denver Broncos replace their former Special Teams Captain?

Demarcus Ware announced his retirement on Monday and Kayvon Webster signed a much deserved deal with the Los Angeles Rams. Two captains on defense and special teams are now gone.

Webster’s departure leaves the team questioning who will step up and take on the role that he did on special teams and cornerback. Last year it was David Bruton who signed with Washington that left the Broncos in a similar jam.

That is where Kayvon filled that void. Now we will analyze which potential players can be that spark that Kayvon provided the Broncos last season.

Lorenzo Doss, Zaire Anderson, and Corey Nelson all come to mind. Doss, Anderson, and Nelson all contributed big time last season on defense and special teams.

While Doss only amassed four total tackles and two passes defended, he fit the mold schematically for what the Broncos wanted. Aqib Talib sat out games with a back injury last season.

Webster stepped up in his absence and Doss got in where Webster usually rotated. At 5’11 Doss is sizeable enough to play on the outside, but is versatile enough to cover the slot.

Doss, despite lacking on field experience in his 2nd season as a Bronco, stepped up particularly well against the Chargers. He stepped in front of Phillip Rivers pass and tipped it to Darian Stewart who intercepted it.

I believe Doss can fit the role of Kayvon Webster on defense and be a pivotal piece of an already stout secondary. Now we must ask who will step up on Special Teams?

Over the years Denver had Wesley Woodyard, David Bruton, and Kayvon Webster as special teams captains. Each story is similar, they have moved on to have a more involved role on defense.

Zaire Anderson and Corey Nelson I believe can be one or two guys that can have as big of an impact on special teams. As a matter of fact they did last season.

Denver was down 7-3 against the Bengals when Riley Dixon punted the ball away to Pacman Jones. Upon fielding the return, Jones couldn’t make a move before Zaire punched the ball out.

The Broncos recovered the ball and was immediately sparked by Zaire’s huge play. Corey Nelson accounted for 67 tackles and 5 pass deflections on both defense and special teams.

Nelson reminds me a lot of Wesley Woodyard when he was starting to grow as a name. Nelson saw time at ILB when Brandon Marshall was out with a hamstring injury.

Under Brock Olivo, I am sure he is as passionate about these guys as I am and hopefully you are.

These are the three athletes that I see who will step up and take on that responsibility that Kayvon Webster had. What do you think Broncos Country?
