The Denver Broncos and head coach Gary Kubiak announced on Monday that Trevor Siemian will start the team’s third preseason game against the LA Rams…
Huge news out of Denver on Monday as Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak announced that Trevor Siemian would be his starting quarterback in the team’s week three preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
The drama at the quarterback position is far from over, but for those who understand what the big picture looks like, it’s not nearly as stressful.
This is Paxton Lynch’s job, and whoever has it in the meantime is simply keeping the seat warm. That’s really all there is to it. It’s pretty crazy, however, that Mark Sanchez has been unable to set himself apart to this point, especially after Siemian threw a pretty bad pick-six in the team’s preseason loss to the 49ers.
In previous weeks, Gary Kubiak had waited a lot longer to name his starter at QB, but made this decision pretty quickly.
It wasn’t all on Sanchez, but he had three turnovers in two quarters of preseason play and nearly had a fourth on a terrible pass against the 49ers that somehow fell safely to the ground.
Neither quarterback has been able to really set themselves apart this offseason, but in my opinion, Siemian has looked better in two preseason games. In particular, I felt like Siemian did a really good job against the Chicago Bears at pushing the ball downfield, something we haven’t seen a whole lot from either guy.
Some of Siemian’s downfield throws weren’t caught, causing his completion percentage on longer throws to look bad, but there’s no question he has the arm strength to get it there.
It’s not Siemian’s physical ability or abilities as a quarterback that worry me about him starting in a regular season game — it’s his response to the pick-six he threw against the 49ers. When he came back out onto the field after throwing the interception, he lacked confidence, and put way too much behind his throws causing them to sail away.

The book on Siemian has always been that he is a calm, cool, and collected customer, but it’s clear that the interception got to him. I don’t know if these two quarterbacks feel the pressure of the rookie behind them, but Gary Kubiak appears to be exploring every possibility before forcing Paxton Lynch into something he might not be mentally ready for.
The Broncos must feel like Siemian has a really good grasp on the offense and what they are trying to do, because at this point, it just feels like you would want to throw Lynch out there and see what he can do with the first unit.
Maybe that’s just me.
Whatever the case, Siemian has a chance again to prove himself, this time against one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL. The pressure is on. Not like it wasn’t before…
