The competition at Denver Broncos training camp is starting to heat up. With the first weekend of training camp completed, the team will now go into pads and show the coaches what they can do. Perhaps one punter has already shown the Denver Broncos that he deserves to stick around.

It was reported on Monday morning before the Broncos took the field for day four of training camp that the team has reduced Britton Colquitt’s base salary for the 2015 season. The restructure was reduced from three million to around $1.6 million. Before the restructure, Britton Colquitt was the ninth highest paid player on the Broncos roster.

Britton Colquitt has this year and 2016 left on his deal, and the Broncos decided not to reduce or change up the amount he will make in 2016. As of now, Britton Colquitt is slated to make four million in his final year, so perhaps the restructure of his 2015 salary sends a message, both on the positive and the negative part. However, whatever messages that maybe depends on who you are asking.

With this restructure done, it provides so many scenarios. The Broncos will not be taking a huge cap hit in 2015. The restructure saves them close to $1.5 million dollars. The team can use that money to sign someone or help with finances on a contract. Perhaps they use it to get a deal done for Von Miller?

The restructure also tells me that perhaps Karl Schmitz, a guy that I have high hopes for, has not been competitive with Britton Colquitt that would sway John Elway and company to go with the YouTube star over the seasoned veteran. However, we are only three days into training camp. Anything can happen, but it appears that with this move it could scream “Practice Squad” for Karl Schmitz.

This restructure also sends a message to Britton Colquitt himself. In my honest opinion, unless the punter in question is solid at what he does at a contestant rate, there is no need to pay a punter so much money. Britton Colquitt has struggled the last couple years, but the guy has more experience. The reduced salary was the biggest issue with Britton Colquitt and now that it is reduced it could be a blessing for him.

There is still quite a bit of time left during the dog days of summer. Anything can happen between now and early September. With the look of things though, it might be implied that Britton Colquitt will have a job with the Denver Broncos in 2015. Now the big question is can he provide results?
