Broncos Camp: Von Miller not thinking about new contract

Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller is in line for a humongous pay day at the end of this year, but it’s not something he’s got at the forefront of his mind.

At least, that’s what he’s telling all of us…

“I have always said before that when I’m here, on the football field and I’m grinding that I really don’t think about it at all,” Miller said. “When I go home, I really don’t think about it at all. That’s just what has worked for me coming from college, through my rookie season and here now. I do give it mind when you guys (media) talk about it, but as soon as I get out this moment right here, I’m on to the next thing. I’m just trying to be the best Von that I can be and I’m just trying to be great.

Whatever Miller is doing, it’s working.

Not only is he improving daily as a football player, but he’s received a clean slate from the NFL’s substance abuse program. After two years of no slip-ups or off-field incidents, Miller has been removed from the drug program. Apparently, that doesn’t phase him either.

“I mean it’s nice, but things don’t change. I’m still the same guy I was at the beginning of this year and I’m still grinding.”

Miller’s not one to fluff around with words. He’s also not one to beat around the bush. When asked if he was relieved about the reports of him being removed from the drug program, he didn’t respond how most probably expected him to.

“No. Really, I’ve been feeling good this whole year. [I am] just taking it one day at a time, the same thing I’ve been doing. [I am] just keeping my mind in the moment and just taking it one day at a time.”

As was the case last year at this time, Miller seems incredibly focused. Reports have emerged from anyone with eyes on Broncos camp that he has stood out in a very, very good way. What we saw from Miller in 2012 was merely a glimpse of the defensive MVP potential he has. This season, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying I feel like he is going to unleash on the rest of the league.

Last season, Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs racked up 22 sacks. Miller might never say it, but he didn’t need a computer to look up that stat when asked about Houston’s massive new deal from the Chiefs.

“I was glad for it just for Justin, in general. I know Justin personally and with the year that he had, not just that year, but all of the years that he has had since he has been in the league, he’s been deserving. I was happy for Justin as an individual. With 22 sacks I think that you should get a lot more, but I’m happy for him. It’s great for him.

And 22 sacks is absolutely not out of the question for Miller this season. It seems foolish to try and predict something like that, but it’s just as foolish to underestimate a player with this kind of talent. With his dismal 2013 season now a distant memory, Miller is set for undoubtedly his best year as a Bronco, a year in which he is playing for his first big NFL contract extension.

If I’m John Elway, I might just prepare a blank check and hand it to Von, and let him do the rest.
