If the Indianapolis Colts are heading toward a full-scale tear-down/rebuild, then the Denver Broncos need to be ready to make a deal before the NFL trade deadline.

The Broncos have some obvious needs staring them in the face with the NFL trade deadline approaching on Tuesday, November 10. One of the team's top needs right now is at the running back position.

JK Dobbins has not looked like himself, and is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry this season. Jonah Coleman is a rookie who is just coming off injured reserve, even if the team has high hopes for him. Tyler Badie also looks set to miss time after an injury suffered in Week 6.

He isn't the first to call for this move to be made, but Sean Payton's old star left tackle with the Saints -- Terron Armstead -- is calling for the Broncos to be the team to trade for Jonathan Taylor if the Colts make him available.

Armstead feels like the Broncos could take some pressure off quarterback Bo Nix by adding a player like Taylor at the running back position, and he would certainly be a jolt for one of the league's worst running games.

"I would love to see him in Denver...Could help alleviate the issues around Bo Nix right now until he gets his groove. Hopefully he finds his groove, and the offense can start to operate."

It's also worth noting that Sean Payton tried to hire Terron Armstead as recently as the 2025 offseason. Not that Armstead can make a deal happen, but Sean listens to his former players and values their thoughts tremendously.

Broncos' run game struggling to create anything in 2026

Armstead, just like everyone, can see exactly what ails the Broncos' offense right now. Even with Bo Nix struggling, teams are daring the Broncos to run the ball. JK Dobbins is facing 8+ men in the box fewer than all but one running back with at least 80 rushing attempts so far this season (Jaguars RB Bhayshul Tuten).

That fact is extremely disturbing when you consider these numbers about the Broncos not creating any yardage after contact.

To sum it up, the Broncos are getting lighter boxes with their featured back on the field more than almost anyone else, and despite having "numbers", Dobbins is not creating anything.

Dobbins himself has mentioned recently that he's not been 100 percent this season. That much is clear.

The question at this point is whether or not the Broncos are going to actually do something about it.

They should.

If Jonathan Taylor is available, he would have to be considered one of the top two or three potential trade targets for the Broncos. The team can see that the running game is struggling. They were going to shop around in free agency before it became clear that Kenneth Walker and Travis Etienne were choosing the Chiefs and Saints, respectively.

At that point, Dobbins was truly the best option on the market, so they didn't waste any more time.

They didn't commit too much money to Dobbins to say, "We can't go after another back right now," even one as high-priced as Taylor.
