Justin Simmons, S: $18,150,000

Justin Simmons is the third of three Denver Broncos players over the $18M mark in terms of cap hits for the 2023 season. He’s a player who is regarded by many as one of the top-tier safeties in the entire NFL.

Simmons has 27 interceptions in seven seasons with the team. He had a career-best six interceptions in 2022 and five in each of the two previous seasons before that. Although his tackle totals were down to the second-worst of his career, he still made a huge impact on the team. No, it didn’t result in a whole lot of wins for the team, but Simmons is just one piece of the puzzle and by no means was he the problem.

You can talk about how he’s just a safety and how quarterbacks deserve to be the highest-paid player on a team but based on last year, as well as the past couple of seasons, Simmons probably should be the highest-paid player on the team. In fact, I’m a little bit surprised that he isn’t. It’s kind of disappointing for him to not be but I understand that quarterback is the most important piece on a team and it should be that way.

Simmons has been through a lot as a member of the Denver Broncos. He has never been on a winning team. He’s never sniffed the playoffs in the NFL. I really feel bad for him because he seems like such a stand-up person. Obviously, he wants to cash in just like most NFL players. I just wish that the play around him would improve. He just can’t catch a break in the NFL.
