The Denver Broncos named Bo Nix their starting QB on Wednesday, so let's rank him among all 32 quarterbacks in the NFL for the 2024 season.
Yes, we’ll power rank all 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL now that the Broncos have named Bo Nix their starting QB for 2024. It is a joyous time in Broncos Country, as the team seems to finally have an identity.
The verdict is clearly still out on Nix turning into a viable passer in the NFL, but there is a sort of calmness while watching Bo Nix play QB. Hopefully this can carry into his rookie season and beyond. Let’s power rank all 32 starting QBs ahead of the 2024 season.
Ranking Denver Broncos' Bo Nix among all 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL
32. Drake Maye - New England Patriots
Drake Maye may end up winning the starting QB job for the New England Patriots. He is currently competing with Jacoby Brissett, who the team brought back in free agency. Maye hasn’t had nearly as good of a preseason as other rookie QBs, so there is a lot unknown with Maye at this point.
31. Jayden Daniels - Washington Commanders
I personally disagreed with the Washington Commanders decision to take Jayden Daniels in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it’s clear that they hope Daniels is the real deal. The Commanders have undergone a ton of change this offseason, and Daniels is the most notable of that change.
30. Bo Nix - Denver Broncos
I would expect Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix to shoot up these rankings by the time the 2024 NFL Season is over. It really feels like Nix and Sean Payton is the perfect fit, perhaps an ode to Payton and Drew Brees and even a current version like Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy. Can Payton and Nix make magic happen in Denver?
29. Caleb Williams - Chicago Bears
Caleb Williams is probably going to be very good as a rookie, but the Chicago Bears may not live up to all of the offseason hype they are getting. Williams was clearly the best QB in the 2024 NFL Draft.
28. Bryce Young - Carolina Panthers
Bryce Young had a shaky rookie season, and while it was not all on him, Young didn’t exactly do that many good things. Young still has a ton to prove, and being that the current Carolina Panthers regime did not draft him, I would not be surprised if they tried to move on if the second-year passer did not show enough in 2024.
27. Will Levis - Tennessee Titans
Will Levis is also a QB who did not show a ton of promise during his rookie season, but the Tennessee Titans offensive personnel situation was awful. With an improved supporting cast, Levis could take a modest step forward.
26. Daniel Jones - New York Giants
Daniel Jones is committing theft with the four-year, $160 million contract he is on from the New York Giants. This may be the worst starting QB in the NFL who isn’t still in their development. The fact that Jones even got this extension is a huge indictment on the incompetence of the Giants front office.
25. Sam Darnold - Minnesota Vikings
Sam Darnold may not play as poorly as some think in the 2024 NFL Season, but I would not buy too much into Darnold working with Kevin O’Connell.
24. Geno Smith - Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith is not a franchise QB and I reckon that the Seattle Seahawks are going to move off of the QB after the 2024 NFL Season. The Denver Broncos will face off against the Seahawks in Week 1 of the new year.
23. Anthony Richardson - Indianapolis Colts
Anthony Richardson was never really a good college QB and showed a bit of promise during his rookie season. If you are wanting to target him for fantasy purposes, that could be a good idea, but there is just so much unknown with this passer at this point.
22. Deshaun Watson - Cleveland Browns
What is going on with Deshaun Watson? Is he even a franchise QB? Watson has been quite putrid during the first two years with the Cleveland Browns. If he can’t turn it around in 2024, the Browns may have to make quite the bold move to rid themselves of this mistake.
21. Russell Wilson - Pittsburgh Steelers
Russell Wilson is a declined quarterback who is just not a viable every-week starter in the NFL at this point. It's a sad decline to watch, as Wilson was once among the most elite at his position in the NFL. The Denver Broncos cut ties with Wilson after two seasons and just 30 starts.
20. Gardner Minshew - Las Vegas Raiders
Gardner Minshew is a very good backup, but that's it. The fact that the Las Vegas Raiders are rolling him out as their starter in 2024 is hilarous and kind of pathetic. Minshew will be able to hang around the NFL for years and should be able to start about four games a year, but he's not going to lead a team into the postseason or anything.
19. Derek Carr - New Orleans Saints
Derek Carr is hilarious. He has been constantly average-ish for years, and it's a very sad reality that the New Orleans Saints handed him that massive contract last offseason. I do believe the Saints may cut him next offseason. I guess at the least, Carr isn't always losing games for his team. He's just not a great QB by any means.
18. Baker Mayfield - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield had a nice 2023 season, helping lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 9-8 record, NFC South title, and even a playoff victory. However, Mayfield's ceiling is obvious and he is not going to lead a team way deep into the playoffs. Still, though, Mayfield has turned his career around and is a respectable, solid QB.
17. Jalen Hurts - Philadelphia Eagles
Walk with me, folks. Jalen Hurts is overrated. He's played four years in the NFL and has had one above-average season. One! With all of the talent that Hurts is constantly surrounded by on the Philadelphia Eagles, you'd expect that Jalen Hurts would have better production. He doesn't, and I am not sure the pass-happy Kellen Moore is going to be able to fix him.
16. Aaron Rodgers - New York Jets
Why are we pretending that Aaron Rodgers is anything special at this point? I mean, the last season he played was in 2022, and he had a passer rating in the low-90s. He's going to be coming off of a major, major injury with his torn Achilles, so I do not expect Rodgers to be all that special this coming season.
15. Kyler Murray - Arizona Cardinals
Kyler Murray is a borderline elite quarterback, who needs to re-establish himself in the NFL QB hierarchy, as he will now be two years removed from a torn ACL. Murray is a true dual-threat passer and may shoot up these power rankings in a very short time.
14. Trevor Lawrence - Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence has played three years in the NFL and really hasn't lived up to the "generational" label that was given to him when he was coming out of the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed a long-term deal this offseason and could end up being a thorn in the side of opposing defenses if he pans out.
13. Jordan Love - Green Bay Packers
The way Jordan Love ended up figuring out the QB position in 2023 for the Green Bay Packers was astounding. He inked a long-term deal with the team and definitely made some Aaron Rodgers-esque off-platform throws. The Broncos took down the Packers in the 2023 NFL Season at home.
12. Tua Tagovailoa - Miami Dolphins
Tua Tagovailoa inked a long-term deal with the Miami Dolphins this offseason and is locked up for the long-term. He's a very good passer who is deadly accurate, but I am not sure he will ever lead the Dolphins to the Super Bowl.
11. Kirk Cousins - Atlanta Falcons
Kirk Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons in free agency this past offseason. If Bo Nix ended up being a more athletic version of Kirk Cousins, would Broncos fans be OK with that? Cousins and Nix do share some similarities in their game.
10. Brock Purdy - San Francisco 49ers
Both Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers offensive system are excellent. Why are we overthinking this? Purdy may not be an alien athlete at the position, but he's still among the best passers in the league and should be for a very long time.
9. Justin Herbert - Los Angeles Chargers
Justin Herbert is a QB that is not as good as everyone thinks. He can operate offenses just fine but doesn't really do anything special outside of having a big arm and being able to make a lot of throws.
8. Matthew Stafford - Los Angeles Rams
Matthew Stafford is still slinging the rock with the best of them and could have another few elite years left. The 2023 Los Angeles Rams made a late-season push and finished the year 10-7.
7. Josh Allen - Buffalo Bills
Slightly overrated by many in the NFL, Josh Allen is not the secon-best QB in the league like some think. Seventh feels like the right ranking for the dual-threat passers who simply cannot stop turning the ball over. The Broncos beat the Buffalo Bills in 2023, and that was partly thanks to two Josh Allen interceptions.
6. Jared Goff - Detroit Lions
Jared Goff has really revived his career with the Detroit Lions and has thrown 59 touchdown passes over the last two seasons. He's also played in a Super Bowl and does have a ton of playoff experience, so he deserves his flowers.
5. Dak Prescott - Dallas Cowboys
Let's not overthink Dak Prescott. He's a top-5 QB and played like one in 2023, tossing 36 touchdowns against nine interceptions. He should soon sign a huge contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. Prescott's playoff success, or lack thereof, is a valid criticism, but he's still among the best QBs in the NFL, period.
4. CJ Stroud - Houston Texans
Yes, CJ Stroud is the fourth-best QB in the NFL. He proved it during his rookie season and is going to win the MVP in 2024. The most ideal scenario for the Denver Broncos in 2024 is Bo Nix turning out to be the 2024 version of CJ Stroud during his rookie season.
3. Lamar Jackson - Baltimore Ravens
Now a two-time MVP, Lamar Jackson is already building himself a Hall of Fame NFL career. He's the best dual-threat QB of all-time and has years to win more MVP awards, so he could go down in the record books, perhaps, as having the most MVPs in NFL history.
Anyway, his performances in the playoffs keep him from being ranked any higher than this, but it's clear that Jackson is among the most explosive players in all of sports.
2. Joe Burrow - Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow is pretty clearly the second-best QB in the NFL. He's proven to be the only passer in the NFL currently who can go toe-to-toe with Mahomes himself, which is a huge factor in Burrow being ranked at two. Now, the bigger picture here is whether Burrow can even stay on the field for a full season, which is something he has never done in his NFL career.
If he can, the Bengals will again be Super Bowl contenders.
1. Patrick Mahomes - Kansas City Chiefs
Duh. Unfortunately, Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL until further notice. He's helped lead the Kansas City Chiefs to three out of the last five Super Bowls and is right in the middle of his prime. It's a disaster scenario for the Denver Broncos, who have no answer for Mahomes. Perhaps Bo Nix could end up being it?
But there isn't a single argument to rank another QB over Mahomes at this point.
