There are plenty of talking heads in the Denver media sect who have had enough of Sean Payton's "slow to hire" philosophy. All throughout the course of this Denver Broncos coaching search, the team has been tight-lipped with things going on behind the scenes. People assumed the team was being lazy in its process, spending time on hunting trips or golfing rather than working on pressing matters for the organization (seriously, these things are being said), but the Broncos have been at work putting things together.
On Wednesday night, a Tweet from Mile High Sports' Eric Goodman apparently drew the attention of head coach Sean Payton. Payton, who is always active on Twitter (and entertaining), decided this particular clip was one he was willing to clap back on.
Sean Payton claps back at reporters amidst Denver Broncos staff assembly
According to this perfect clap back from Sean Payton, the Denver Broncos have actually hired 16 coaches and only have five hires left to make. That's pretty stunning considering very little of that has leaked to the media. Here is what we know of the team's coaching staff based on what has been reported:
- OL coach Zach Strief
- WR coach Keary Colbert
- TE coach Declan Doyle
- Special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica
- Assistant HC Mike Westhoff
- Offensive quality control Logan Kilgore
- Strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple
As of right now, that's seven hires out of apparently 16 that have been made according to Sean Payton that people actually know about. That's quite the accomplishment with the way information makes its way to the public eye so quickly these days. It seems like the Broncos really relish the way things aren't getting out of the building lately, and there's nothing wrong with that.
It certainly gives us a lot to talk about.
As of right now, what reason does anyone have to worry about the Denver Broncos' coaching staff? Anyone who is level-headed could tell you that it's clear Sean Payton has had a plan all along, and that the original plan perhaps included former Broncos head coach Vic Fangio. Unfortunately, Fangio decided to go to the Miami Dolphins, which is understandable. He ultimately considered coming back to Denver to coach with Payton, and that in itself is wild to think about.
When Fangio decided to go back to Miami, it was audition season for the defensive coordinator position. I think people wrongfully assume that an interview process taking time means you're making a bad decision, you're indecisive in general, or you aren't a desirable spot. As Sean Payton has proven, that's not the case.
Throughout the course of the Denver Broncos' head coaching search, people were adamant that nobody was going to want to work in Denver. Nobody would want to work with Russell Wilson. Nobody was interested in going up against Mahomes and Andy Reid. Nobody this, nobody that. Well, the Broncos made arguably the best head coach hire of the cycle, but that trump card didn't even last 16 days.
The bigger problem here is that so many talking heads in the media lack creativity. They have become so good at talking about hard news that they've forgotten about content creation and actually having original thoughts and ideas. That doesn't sit well with people whose jobs are reacting to actual news.
