Broncos' best chance to get back draft picks is still tied to wide receiver position

The Denver Broncos will soon be entering free agency along with the rest of the league, looking at how to fix the roster but the team will also look at the idea of recouping some of the draft picks it has traded.

Last season, multiple picks were traded off to the Seattle Seahawks in order to acquire Russell Wilson. As a result, the Seahawks had the Broncos' first two picks last year and they have their first two picks (including No. 5 overall) this year.

The Broncos got back one of those first rounders ahead of the trade deadline last season by sending Bradley Chubb off to the Miami Dolphins, then used that pick as part of the package to get Sean Payton to come be the team's new head coach.

The Broncos currently don't hold a pick until the third round of the upcoming draft but they do have back-to-back picks in that round, which is a good thing. However, the team will likely consider options to get more picks in this draft.

The best way to do that, as it relates to the current roster, is to look into trading one of the wide receivers on the roster. The Broncos aren't exactly "loaded" at wide receiver but they do have youth in that area and could potentially find a trading partner willing to give up picks for the potential of one of them.

Jerry Jeudy was on the trade block last season and that does not seem to be a secret. It's likely that no team was willing to meet the Broncos' asking price and they held onto him. Jeudy did have his best season as a pro, catching 67 passes for 972 yards and six touchdowns and his future looks bright. At the same time, he would bring the biggest potential return of any player on this list.

Courtland Sutton's name has come up inside Broncos Country many times when the idea of a trade comes up and there could be several teams interested in him. He may be the player on this list who would have the best combination of potential return value and the team's ability to replace his spot on the roster.

Sutton has played well for the team when he's healthy but if the Broncos could somehow get a day two pick in return for him, they would have to think long and hard about making that deal.

The Broncos can absord the loss of one of their wide receivers

Tim Patrick, despite coming off of a torn ACL, could also have some trade potential. He and Sutton are similar players so the Broncos don't necessarily need both of them. Patrick would not fetch a great return but extra picks can be of value.

Finally, if a team is willing to pay up for the potential of K.J. Hamler, he could be an option as well. That potential has never come close to being realized in Denver as his short career has been marred by injuries. But he's still young at just 23 years old and can be a legitimate deep threat when healthy.

If the Broncos could find a trade partner willing to give something up to get him, that would have to be explored as well.

The Broncos still have last year's fifth-round pick Montrell Washington and two exciting undrafted players in Brandon Johnson and Jalen Virgil on the roster as well. They could easily absorb the loss of one of the top four wide receivers in order to get another pick or two in the draft.

Don't be surprised if a deal for one of these players takes place.
