JL Skinner's goal-line stuff could change Broncos' entire season

JL Skinner's big play was more meaningful than you realized.

Not to be overly hyperbolic about just one play, but JL Skinner's tackle on Kenneth Walker at the 1-yard line in the Denver Broncos' win over the Kansas City Chiefs might have changed the entire season.

The Chiefs were knocking at the door, threatening to score from just one yard out. After racking up over 300 rushing yards against the Broncos in just two games, it should have been easy for Kenneth Walker and the Chiefs to get just one more, right?

Apparently not.

The stuff by JL Skinner at the 1-yard line was a pendulum-swinging play in the AFC West, and it came out of absolutely nowhere.

JL Skinner's stuff on Kenneth Walker helped propel the Broncos to 1st place in the division

This is just an unbelievable play all around, but if JL Skinner is not there to meet Kenneth Walker in the hole, he obviously scores easily. Everyone else on the Broncos' defensive front does a great job of getting push and winning their matchups, but the play is designed for Walker to either punish the player meeting him in that hole, or for the Broncos not to fill it in the first place.

The fact that Skinner almost never plays defense for the Broncos makes this play even more impressive. He has played a grand total of 65 career snaps (this is his 4th NFL season) on the defensive side of the ball, and only 11 snaps this season.

The Broncos have been dealing with some injuries at the safety position with Talanoa Hufanga missing the game entirely due to an ankle injury. Brandon Jones has been nursing a hamstring injury, and left the game against the Chiefs because of it.

We've seen more Taylor Rapp, Devon Key, and now JL Skinner than anyone was really comfortable with going into the season.

But those guys have all risen to the occasion at different moments. None bigger than this one by Skinner.

JL Skinner's tackle has huge implications on the AFC West for 2026

One play does not define an entire game, but sometimes, games do come down to just one or two plays. For the Broncos, there are a number of huge moments you can point to, but the play made by Skinner has led us all down a timeline we wanted to be living in as members of Broncos Country.

But what if he didn't?

If the Broncos had lost this game against the Chiefs, they would be 5-3 instead of 6-2, and the Chiefs (who would be 6-1 in this hypothetical scenario) would have a commanding lead in the division. This was already Kansas City's fourth AFC West matchup of the year, and they were on the cusp of going 4-0 to start the season.

That includes two wins against the Broncos.

I guess we'll never know.

Instead of the Broncos being down two games in the loss column and losing both head-to-head matchups against the Chiefs, they are in 1st place in the division. They have a huge advantage over the Chiefs for the remainder of the season with the Broncos having one of the "easier" schedules in the league, and the Chiefs having one of the hardest.

Everybody knew the stakes were high for this particular midseason AFC West clash, but a 40 percent swing in the division title odds is absolutely mind-boggling.

Again, not to be dramatic, but that is exactly what JL Skinner's hit preserved.
