With at least 5 receptions against the Los Angeles Rams, wide receiver Courtland Sutton has a chance to etch his name in Denver Broncos' franchise history.
According to Tyler Gorse (Denver Broncos communications), Sutton is just 5 catches away from passing franchise legend Ed McCaffrey for the 5th-most receptions in franchise history. By the time the Broncos are done playing the Rams on Sunday Night Football, Sutton might have made a little team history.
With a chance to enter the top-5 in franchise history in receptions, there is even more reason for the Broncos to feature Sutton in a crucial Week 3 matchup under the lights.
Courtland Sutton's chance at Broncos history adds more intrigue to SNF
To say that Sutton has not had an ideal start to the 2026 season would be an understatement.
Through the team's first two games, Sutton has just one 1st-down reception. On 9 targets so far this year, Sutton has just 5 catches overall, and two of Bo Nix's throws in his direction have been intercepted. Nix's passer rating when targeting Sutton this season is a putrid 25.5.
His slow start, in combination with the Broncos paying him his prorated bonus money now (instead of later), has many wondering if we're witnessing the beginning of the end of Sutton's time with the Broncos.
It's absolutely possible that this will be the final season for Sutton as a member of the Denver Broncos, but it's hard to see him going out on a sour note. The way he's played through the first two games of the 2026 season is not indicative of what we've come to expect from him, and you can almost take it to the bank that the Broncos are going to do what it takes to make Sunday's matchup against the Rams a "get-right" game for Sutton.
The way Jaylen Waddle played against the Jacksonville Jaguars was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Broncos' offense. They have every reason to keep feeding Waddle the ball until defenses adjust and/or prove that they can stop it.
But the performance of Waddle against the Jaguars also helps open things up for Sutton immediately. The Rams are going to have to make sure they account for Waddle every single play, and it won't be surprising to see Sutton get a lot more one-on-one opportunities. And he's thrived in those situations throughout the course of his career.
There are obviously no guarantees when it comes to the NFL. It's possible that Sutton could have another rough game against the Rams and we're still talking about him needing to get on track for Week 4. It just feels like the stars are aligning for him to have a big game on Sunday night.
The potential at making a little franchise history definitely helps.
The Broncos will be more focused on winning the game than they are on getting Sutton 5 catches, but feeding Sutton can go hand-in-hand with winning the game.
The Broncos are currently riding a 9-game winning streak against NFC opponents. During that stretch, Sutton is averaging 6 receptions for 75 yards per game, and that includes a game against the New Orleans Saints in which he didn't have a single reception.
If he can match those averages against the Rams, and continue playing some of his best ball against another NFC opponent, Sutton could surpass McCaffrey on the team's all-time receptions list while also finally getting going in the 2026 season. And that timing would be perfect for the Broncos, considering the opponent.
