The Denver Broncos saw their preseason win streak get snapped in Week 2, and it also exposed some issues that the team must correct before the start of the regular season. While the Broncos do have a loaded roster and could win it all this year, not everything is perfect.
And there could be some offseason moves that the team may regret not making, and preseason could have just exposed them.
Let's dive into those three issues here.
Denver Broncos offseason moves the team wished they would have made
Broncos should have upgraded from Alex Singleton
During the Broncos preseason blowout loss, inside linebacker Alex Singleton seemed to be at the center of a Green Bay Packers touchdown. He was well out of position and clearly changed the defense right before the snap.
While we didn't need preseason to identify that Singleton is a weak spot on defense, seeing it in-game is only further confirmation that the Broncos re-signing him was a mistake, especailly given the insane amount of free agent inside linebackers who were available this offseason. The Broncos had numerous chances to upgrade, but simply did not.
Singleton is unplayable in coverage, doesn't get into the backfield much at all, and is consistently someone who is at the center of big plays from the opposing offense. The Broncos not doing much outside of re-signing Singleton continues to be a mistake. Sure, bringing Justin Strnad back and snagging Red Murdock in the 2026 NFL Draft were both great moves, but those moves clearly haven't shored up this position, as it's still viewed as the weakest on the roster.
Broncos should have brought in a veteran to help fill the void left by John Franklin-Myers
The Broncos are clearly fans of the players they already had in this room. Outside of bringing in Tyler Onyedim in the third round, the same faces are present, and as of now, it feels like the duo of Malcolm Roach and Enyi Uwazurike will be tasked with filling in the void left by John Franklin-Myers, who signed a deal worth $21 million with the Tennessee Titans in free agency.
And, for the most part, the defensive line rotation has largely been productive this offseason, but the backups across the board on defense got exposed against the Packers, making us wonder if the Broncos should have shelled out a modest free agency contract for a floor-raising presence along the defensive line.
Calais Campbell, who is from Denver, signed this type of deal with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason. Campbell had 6.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits in 2025 for the Atlanta Falcons and has not missed a start in three years.
While the Broncos development up front is typically strong, Franklin-Myers pass-rush upside was borderline elite, so primarily banking on in-house replacements might not be the best idea.
Broncos should have sought out a legitimate upgrade at QB2
With just one preseason game left, all indications are that the backup quarterback job is up for grabs. While competition is never a bad thing, there is also something to be said about the Broncos not necessarily having a slam-dunk backup QB right now.
Both Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger have flashed and struggle at times this offseason. Stidham's preseason showing against the Packers was largely forgettable, and as a QB, Stidham isn't close to the athlete that Bo Nix is. Ehlinger is a much better athlete, but he's not quite the proccessor that Stidham and Nix are.
When you look at the free agent QB market from this past offseason, it's clear that there could have been some legitimate QB2 upgrades that the Broncos could have pursued. With Nix being a reliable player in terms of availability, the backup QB position doesn't necessarily need to be a huge investment, but freak things happen, as Broncos fans know, so the backup may have to come in and play in a pinch.
And while it was a nearly impossible situation for Stidham, his performance in the AFC Championship Game was largely awful. The Broncos did have some options out there in free agency to upgrade at the QB2 spot, and that could be something they regret not doing this offseason.
