Alex Singleton's agent just came to his defense at the worst possible time

The Denver Broncos were not only bad on defense in Week 1, they were flat-out horrific. In fact, it was a historically bad game in terms of missed tackles, and no, that isn't an exaggeration. It wasn't a massive surprise that the Broncos lost, as it was a divisional game in one of the toughest environments in sports to play in.

However, the way the game unfolded was baffling, and it simply goes to show you that the Broncos just weren't ready - whether they were cocky or what is up for debate, but what can't be debated is just how poorly this team played for nearly all of the 60 minutes.

Furthermore, inside linebacker Alex Singleton was at the center of it all. He's been a regressing player for the Broncos since the start of the 2025 season, and, perhaps surprisingly, his agent, of all people, took to social media to defend his client at the wrong time.

Paul Sheehy, who represents Singleton, really didn't hold back. It's clear that he's upset with how social media has responded to Singleton and the Broncos Week 1 defensive performance:

While we can't say for sure, it really wouldn't be a shock if some of the players themselves saw what Broncos fans were saying on social media. Countless posts on X/Twitter were hammering Denver for their Week 1 performance, and it was all warraneted. Denver managed to rack up 24 missed tackles on Monday Night Football, which doesn't feel like a real number.

And, unsurprisingly, Singleton, along with DJ Jones, had the most missed tackles, with four:

The one time this agent probably shouldn't have spoken up, he did. This was an indefensible performance by the defense, and it was another bad performance by Singleton. While the Broncos signed him to a two-year deal this past offseason, that doesn't mean the move was the right one to make.

There were a plethora of free agent linebackers available, and it's still odd, even now, that the Broncos decided to run it back with a regressing player and another, Justin Strnad, who has never been a full-time starter in the NFL.

This doesn't mean that Singleton doesn't make plays anymore - he did come up big-time during last year's Divisional Round with a key forced fumble, and he's surely had a plethora of key tackles and stops over the years, but that doesn't mean he isn't a regressing player.

With how good the defense everywhere else, it's still a mystery as to why the front office has continually dropped the ball at the linebacker spot. Not only was the free agency class quite deep, but the 2026 NFL Draft class featured a ton of awesome prospects as well.

How did the Broncos end up with none of them...?

It does feel like, for much of General Manager George Paton's tenure, the overall evaluation of the inside linebacker room has been poor, at best. Paton has largely been a very good GM for the team, as it's not hard to find someone calling the Broncos a Super Bowl contender, but that doesn't mean he's perfect.

He's been able to assemble a top-3 secondary and the best pass-rush in the league, along with a great offensive line and a ton of competent playmakers, but finding a legitimate solution at ILB has eluded him.
