Sunday was a disappointing day for Denver Broncos fans as the Kansas City Chiefs ended up defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Well, while you can’t change any of it at this point, I feel like the referees kind of handed the Chiefs that game. Could there have also been a clue as to a future Bronco that currently works in broadcasting?

During a skit on the Fox show, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton was with Rob Gronkowski for the segment in which the crew was to pick who they thought were going to win the game. The camera caught the two chatting about Gronkowski possibly joining the Broncos, with Payton offering him a spot and stating he wouldn’t have to participate in training camp.

Now, let me make it clear that it was fully and completely scripted. I’m not entirely sure why they chose to do it other than to bring humor to the show. Well, it was pretty funny.

Is it possible that there was some seriousness to it?

The only full-time quarterback Gronkowski ever knew was Tom Brady. At this point, both players have retired and un-retired and then retired again. Would Gronkowski be willing to join forces with Payton in Denver this season? I’ll be honest, it seems pretty unlikely for two reasons.

Like I mentioned, Gronkowski was already un-retired once and while there have been just a few players who have un-retired multiple times, it feels unlikely that Gronkowski would do such a thing.

If I were to put money on it, I would say that he stays retired because he has a good gig at Fox right now.

Here’s somewhat of a twist, though. In December, it was reported that Gronkowski did discuss a return to the Buccaneers if they made the postseason. It never ended up materializing but it does make one wonder if a return to the NFL is something Gronkowski would truly want to do. The report indicates that a return is certainly not off the table.

Gronkowski is 33 years old and it’s not like he would be with the Denver Broncos for 10 seasons. It would just be a one-last attempt to get to and win another Super Bowl. It’s possible that Payton and Gronk have talked about it behind the scenes and not just a fake skit for television. If Gronkowski believes the Broncos are close to winning again, he absolutely could consider it.

It would be a cool story to see Gronkowski officially end his NFL playing career with the Broncos, a team he has had some really good performances against.

Gronkowski’s contract with the Buccaneers expired already, so he would be returning to the NFL as a free agent the Broncos could freely sign.
