Sean Payton is the new head coach of the Denver Broncos and he will now look to fill out the rest of his staff.

With that being said, Sean Payton has a chance to get his first victory if he can get one of the coaches from the previous staff to stay. On Thursday, Payton met with Ejiro Evero, who is currently the Broncos’ defensive coordinator.

It would be huge if the Broncos were able to retain Evero.

Evero could still be a candidate to become head coach of either the Arizona Cardinals or the Indianapolis Colts, the two teams in the league that still have a vacancy. He would of course be expected to jump on either of those opportunities but if not, Payton needs to find a way to keep him.

Evero could be looked at as a defensive coordinator for other teams as well. The Minnesota Vikings, for one, would like to speak to him about that position.

There were rumors that Payton may turn to former Broncos head coach Vic Fangio as his defensive coordinator. That is not going to happen.

That leaves Evero as the best possible candidate for the Broncos. The 42-year-old had a great first season with the Broncos and was one of the few bright spots of the entire year.

The Broncos had a solid year defensively and though they began to give up more yards and points toward the end of a failed season, the defense was a top-five unit for much of the year and it single-handedly kept the Broncos in football games.

If the Broncos lose Evero or Payton decides there could be a better fit, Kris Richard would be one name to keep an eye on. Richard is the former defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks and he served on Payton’s final staff with the New Orleans Saints as a defensive backs coach.

Obviously, keeping Evero in Denver and allowing him to continue to build the defense he had playing at a high level last season should be a top priority.
