Surprise cut or trades for Denver Broncos next year

Ronald Darby, CB

Ronald Darby tore his ACL and will be missing the rest of the 2022 season.  He would have then appeared in just 16 out of a possible 34 regular season games for the Broncos.  He signed a $30 million contract last offseason so you’d think that the team could move off of him and save some money.

However, Darby was exceptional for the Broncos when he was on the field this year and last.  He’s simply a darn good football player and was one of the best CBs in the NFL last year in press coverage.  He doesn’t ever fill up the box score but he has proven to hold his own.

Also, the secondary is a bit older; Justin Simmons will be entering his age-30 season in 2023.  Kareem Jackson is well into his 30s and likely won’t be re-signed.  Damarri Mathis is a rookie so there is some uncertainty there, and K’Waun Williams is in his 30s and has struggled with injury.

It likely makes sense to keep the current secondary in place, but the Broncos could save $10 million by cutting him.
