Although the Denver Broncos are a very disappointing 3-5 to start the 2022 NFL season, the good news for starting quarterback Russell Wilson is that he will have a well-worn path on the proverbial “high road”. Since he left the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster offseason trade, Wilson has been the subject of one jab or another, whether that’s from former Seahawks players now in the media, media members in general, and even Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.
Carroll is likely understandably upset over the fact that things got to the point this offseason where the Seahawks and Wilson decided to part ways. Carroll acknowledged just last year that if it weren’t for Russell Wilson, he’d probably be out of a job at this point, and that’s a valid statement to make. Wilson was the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks for a lot of victories in his first 10 NFL seasons.
Russell Wilson responds to not-so-subtle jab from Pete Carroll regarding wristbands
The Seattle Seahawks look very good this season without Russell Wilson. Apparently, their strong start to the year has given them the freedom to bury Russell Wilson every chance they get, whether that’s utilizing the platform some of their former players have in the media now or just through Pete Carroll directly. Carroll recently made some comments praising Geno Smith for wearing a playsheet on his wrist during games, and made sure to note that there has been opposition to that in the past.
"“If you notice, Geno’s going off the wristband, and that’s a big help,” Carroll said. “It’s smoothed things out, sped things up, cleaned things up. And that’s part of it, too. We never did that before. There was resistance to that, so we didn’t do that before. When (offensive coordinator) Shane (Waldron) says something to Geno, he’s not doubting it. He’s just going with it, so there’s a real immediate flow and that accelerates all the process.”Pete Carroll (via Pro Football Talk)"
If you can’t smell the sour grapes from wherever you’re reading this, get your senses checked. Pete Carroll is absolutely full of it and although he refused to mention Wilson by name, the implication here is very clear and obvious. Nobody but Russell Wilson has been playing quarterback for the Seahawks over the last 10 years besides a handful of games from Geno Smith. This is a direct shot from Carroll (not his first, either) at the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
Life is so much better now, I guess.
Pete Carroll is a 71-year-old man, but these comments are the level of pettiness you might have heard on the bus back in junior high school. Wilson was asked by Denver media about the wristband thing, and the irony of the timing of this is absolutely delicious. Wilson wore a wristband during the Broncos’ victory two weekends ago against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Again, Wilson is doing laps around the high road at this point. If the Broncos didn’t have a losing record right now, there’s no way Carroll and all of these former Seattle people would be saying this about their legendary quarterback. If nothing else, Wilson’s accomplishments in Seattle deserve a bit more tact than this, but they are seemingly much more satisfied kicking the guy while he’s down.
3 Denver Broncos Ring of Fame players that could be interim head coach
What if the Denver Broncos decided to do something similar to the Colts and hire a former Ring of Famer player as interim head coach?
At any rate, hopefully Wilson and the Broncos can build off of their win before the bye week and go on the road against a tough Tennessee Titans team and continue improving offensively. Even if it requires a wristband.
