The Indianapolis Colts made a really odd, unique, fascinating, risky, bold move when they fired head coach Frank Reich and replaced him with former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach. Saturday wasn’t on the Colts’ coaching staff in any capacity other than “consultant” and hasn’t ever coached at the NFL or college level. This move is something the Colts were bullish about and it’s certainly got the NFL world talking. What if the Denver Broncos were to do something similar?

What if we saw the Denver Broncos bring in a former Ring of Fame player as the team’s next head coach, or a head coach on an interim basis? I think there are some fascinating candidates, players who have maintained closeness to the team in some way, shape, or form. Let’s take a look at three of the top picks for Denver Broncos Ring of Fame players to become the team’s interim head coach, if it ever comes to it.

1. Steve Atwater

Steve Atwater is not just a Denver Broncos Ring of Famer, he’s also an NFL Hall of Famer. Atwater has maintained closeness to the team and actually still works with the Broncos as part of their media team producing content online and on the radio. Atwater knows the Broncos’ roster, he knows the players, and he’s close to the organization.

The former hard-hitting safety certainly knows the game well and being in the media, you get the opportunity to really evaluate the roster in a unique way. We always hear Atwater talking about the Broncos’ roster, the state of the team, analyzing and evaluating where things are at. Is it possible that he could step in and lead this team from the head coach’s chair if asked? I think he absolutely could.

Atwater is a living legend, but he exudes humility and to me, that’s one of the greatest signs of leadership. It would be fascinating to see how he would lead the team given his vantage point over the last handful of years.
