Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones was recently named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the team’s recent win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Playing overseas in London didn’t slow Dre’Mont Jones down any as the fourth-year pro collected seven total tackles, three tackles for loss and one key sack of Trevor Lawrence during the Broncos’ 21-17 Week 8 victory.
Jones has become one of the top players on a great Denver defense. On the season, he has 31 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. For his career, he already has 21 sacks, which is a great number for a third-round pick.
This is not the first time Jones was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. He also achieved the feat in his rookie season in 2019. In Week 16 of that year, Jones had 2.5 sacks in a 27-17 win over the Detroit Lions.
Believe it or not, Jones is just the second defensive lineman in Broncos history to win the weekly award more than once. The only other guy to ever do it was Greg Kragen, a mostly forgotten defensive lineman who played for the Broncos from 1985-1993.
Kragen had 708 total tackles and 22 sacks during his 9-year stint in Denver. He played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs before being chosen with the No. 18 overall pick of the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he would finish his playing career.
The Broncos now have had a player win the Special Teams Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week Awards this season. Now they just need someone to step up on what has been a disappointing offense to make it one award for all three phases this season.
As for Jones, he is well on his way to becoming one of the better defensive players and pass-rushers in the NFL. Following this week’s trade of Bradley Chubb, the Broncos are going to need Jones to step up even more.
