New Miami Dolphins edge rusher Bradley Chubb signed a massive contract extension on Thursday morning with the team that is worth over $100 million.  If you wanted confirmation on why the Broncos traded Bradley Chubb, look no further than the extension he signed on Thursday morning.

Chubb’s new deal with Miami is a five-year pact worth up to $111.25 million.  It adds onto the fifth-year option he is playing on now, which makes it, in total, a six-year, $119 million deal.  The extension he signed is worth $22 million per year, but the total deal is worth a hair under $20 million per year.

It’s easy to see why Denver decided to trade him.  The trade was happening regardless.  The team gave Randy Gregory $70 million, drafted Nik Bonitto, and moved Baron Browning to edge.  The team also invested a $30 million contract to DJ Jones and will now likely turn their attention to extending Dre’Mont Jones, who is in a contract year.

The Broncos could have kept Chubb and extended him if they wanted, but the cap crunch that they’d have been under would have been an extremely tight squeeze.  With big contracts like Russell Wilson, Courtland Sutton, Garett Bolles, Justin Simmons, and the defensive front, it’s easy to see why Chubb was the odd man out.

Chubb takes 5.5 sacks in 2022 with him to Miami, where he joins a 5-3 team that is filled with studs and is clearly all in on competing for a Super Bowl.  It’s a huge payday for the fifth-year player, who battled injuries and up-and-down play during his career.  Fortunately, he was able to play well enough to earn the generational money that so many players hope for.

Congratulations are in order for Chubb and all of the work he put in during his football career.  Everything he’s done up until this point has led to this moment.  Now, he can turn his focus towards helping the Dolphins win a Super Bowl, something that seems so far away for Denver.

Now, Denver will enter into a new era with guys like Randy Gregory, Baron Browning, and Nik Bonitto.
