Denver Broncos need coaching adjustments, win or lose in London
The Denver Broncos‘ record is a very disappointing 2-5. This Sunday’s game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars will be a decisive moment at the midseason point. It’s been rumored that if the Broncos lose that Nathaniel Hackett could be fired and numerous players could be traded at the deadline. I agree with these sentiments to varying degrees, but this season isn’t actually over with a loss and isn’t suddenly saved with a victory. The time for coaching changes is next week in an effort to build for the rest of the season and the future.
In the case of Hackett, he appears overwhelmed and his offense is as ineffective as I have ever seen in Denver. He seems to lack any ability to adjust and call plays to come up with points when they are needed. He can’t even get this offense to be mediocre which would have resulted in several more wins with the sensational play of the Denver Broncos’ defense. In fact, every loss has been a re-run in the second half where any success the Broncos offense may have had early is countered by the opposing coach and Hackett has no answer but absolute futility until the opponent finally capitalizes on the multitude of possessions they get as Denver seemingly cannot.
Denver Broncos need to make coaching changes no matter what
Unless Sunday’s offense suddenly looks transformed into the unit we all hoped to see going into this season then Nathaniel Hackett should be replaced as play caller if not fired. Fired would be the most likely since the Broncos bought a bill of goods where his offense would be successful to the tune of Aaron Rodgers-run offenses during his time in Green Bay. That is clearly not the case and with his other blunders as a head coach along with early penalty problems pointing to a lack of discipline and preparation one has to question what else he offers if not offensive acumen.
With the question of “where do we turn?” Travis Wakeman beat me to a few ideas I see fit. First is that Klint Kubiak has play-calling experience. He presumably may have picked a few things up about the West Coast offense throughout his life as well as being around father Gary Kubiak and his Kronies such as Mike Shanahan. Klint is certainly worth a look Mile High Huddle pointed out another in player’s favorite Zach Azzani.
In terms of head coaching duties, Ejiro Evero with his defense’s play has certainly earned the praise and calls to be the interim head coach. The case could also be made that Evero’s focus should stay on his exceptional defense.
I think Klint Kubiak or Ejiro Evero could either make a fine head coach be it now or later and Evero has shown that he can get guys to play for him. Another possibility is Dom Capers for the remainder of the season which Travis also beat me to. He has head coaching experience and perhaps having the head coaching duties left to someone not calling the plays on either side of the ball would help the transition.
Win or lose on Sunday provided there isn’t a miraculous offensive revival these changes need to be made as this team is nothing less than embarrassing in terms of putting up points and finding ways to win close ballgames. Something’s got to give.
