Trading Bradley Chubb could set table for a Dre’Mont Jones’ extension

The Denver Broncos appear to be set on trading edge rusher Bradley Chubb, and this also gives an indication of a future extension for a key player.  Sometimes it’s a numbers game in the NFL.  Teams like the Chiefs and Packers would have loved to have kept their star receivers, but their hefty contract demands didn’t allow that.

Teams have to make decisions like this all the time.  It’s nothing new, and yes, some may think that if a team truly wants to keep a player, they’ll do everything in their power to do so.  I do think that’s the case for the Broncos; if they truly wanted to keep Bradley Chubb, they’d have extended him already or would have made plans to.

Bradley Chubb trade could set up Dre’Mont Jones extension

Because of other circumstances related to a lack of draft capital and other additions to the edge room, along with another key defensive player needing an extension, Chubb is likely to be traded.  There is another player on the defensive front who is in need of an extension, and there is no indication that the Broncos won’t be willing to pay up.

Dre’Mont Jones was drafted back in 2019 and is in the last year of his rookie deal.  There is no fifth-year option because he wasn’t a first-round pick, but he’s developed into one of the best defensive ends in the NFL.  The talented player already has 4.5 sacks on the year from the interior.

He’s also notched 23 total tackles and five QB hits thus far in 2022.  He’s been a consistent force on the defensive line and is on pace to enjoy an 11-sack season.  The signing of DJ Jones and Randy Gregory have likely helped this, and given the uncertainty of the defensive line outside of the Jones “brothers”, it makes a ton of sense that the Broncos are likely prioritizing Dre’Mont Jones over Bradley Chubb.

Chubb is likely also seen as more expendable because of the emergence of Baron Browning as well.  However, when the Broncos made all of the moves that they did along the defensive front this season, it was with the idea that Chubb would be traded in mind and the idea that George Paton would hand over a likely four-year extension for Dre’Mont Jones.
