Time has come for the Denver Broncos to replace Brandon McManus

Brandon McManus is the longest-tenured Bronco on the current roster and has done some good for the team, but it’s time to move on from the veteran.  It’s getting noticeable at this point, as McManus hasn’t been nearly as consistent as some once thought he was.

“McMoney” as some may call him, somehow developed a reputation in the NFL of being one of those really good, consistent kickers that some teams would kill to have.  However, I’m not sure that was ever the case, and it’s becoming more clear now that McManus isn’t making kicks with enough frequency to not warrant at least a kicking competition in the future.

Denver Broncos may have a need for a new kicker

In 2022 so far, his 78.9% field goal percentage ranks 22nd in the NFL.  His 71.4% extra point percentage ranks 32nd.  He’s gotten off to a rocky start in 2022, much like the rest of the team.  And it hasn’t just been this year, either.  McManus’ field goal percentage rankings among the rest of his kicking peers aren’t exactly inspiring.

In 2021, McManus ranked 26th in the NFL with a field goal percentage of 83.9%.  In 2020, he ranked 26th again with an 82.4% field goal percentage.  In 2019, he ranked 15th in the NFL.  In 2018, he ranked 31st in the NFL, and in 2017, he ranked 33rd.

I also think he views himself higher than what his career would indicate.  He seemed to sour on Vic Fangio pretty quickly when Fangio essentially stonewalled him from attempting long field goals during his tenure.  McManus also frequents Twitter to voice his opinion and sometimes displeasure, which seems a bit odd given the fanbase’s displeasure with his performance.

Brandon McManus has been consistent for the Denver Broncos, but he’s been consistently below average for the Broncos.  What many thought was a reliable player has turned into another inconsistent part of the Denver Broncos team.  I think it’s time for the team to look in a different direction for their kicking duties in the future.

Perhaps George Paton would consider drafting a kicker in the upcoming draft.  Even the best kickers in college don’t usually get drafted until the mid-late rounds.  I think McManus has gotten too comfortable being a below-average kicker since I’m not sure he’s ever had competition for his job during his time in Denver.
