The Denver Broncos are likely going to remain in the playoff race for the entire 2022 season, but could be hamstrung in making trade deadline moves.  In the NFL, what we typically see at the trade deadline are two things:

  • Teams who are heading to a rebuild sell off some of their players for draft capital

AND

  • Teams who are making a run to the Super Bowl usually add those players

Denver Broncos will be a team to watch at 2022 NFL Trade Deadline

The Denver Broncos are in some uncharted territory with the first year of the Russell Wilson era.  The team is 2-1, but hasn’t been able to cement itself as a true competitor yet.  It’s only been three games together for Wilson, the offense, and Nathaniel Hackett, so I do believe that the offense will eventually regress to the mean.

I mean, the offense can’t stay bad with Russell Wilson for the entire season, right?  I don’t think is outrageous to think that the offense will get a bit better and the Broncos, as a result, will end up being one of the better teams in the league.

They still do have some easier opponents on their schedule before the trade deadline as well, and I do think they will be in a position where they could potentially add a player or two at the deadline if they want.  Their roster is rather strong, but depending on who could be shopped, the Broncos might have some interest.

However, one major barrier to potentially adding a player or two at the trade deadline is the amount of draft capital that the team has.  They mostly depleted their draft capital for this past draft and in 2023.  They won’t pick until the third round and it’s been obvious how much George Paton values draft picks.

I suppose the Broncos could dip into their 2024 pool of picks, but again, Paton might not want to do that considering he doesn’t have a ton to work with in 2023.  There could be a scenario where the Broncos do indeed add a player at the deadline and perhaps end up trading some of their current players at the end of the season.

I think the main idea here is that the Denver Broncos’ draft pick situation is going to change between now and next April’s draft.  The discussion is a matter of how they go about doing it.
