The Denver Broncos have hired Jerry Rosburg, who has over 40-years of experience, to aid in special in-game decision making.

It is very good to see a Denver Broncos head coach being active and trying to right his wrongs early on in his tenure. As a new-time head coach, Nathaniel Hackett has made some poor in-game decisions over the course of his first two NFL games.

That should change with the hire of Jerry Rosburg, who spent time with the Baltimore Ravens from 2008 to 2018 as well as the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. During his previous NFL stints, he was those teams’ special teams coordinator.

It’s commendable of Hackett to try and take control and make decisions by himself, such as the decision to try a long field goal against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. He has made the call to go for it on fourth down twice so far this season, and the offense converted one of them.

The biggest thing that Hackett has been scrutinized so far is his in-game management at the end of the season opener against the Seahawks. While Broncos kicker Brandon McManus said he should have made the kick and was on board with the decision, there’s no reason why they should not have tried to gain the first down. While something could have gone drastically wrong, putting the ball in Russell Wilson’s hands should have been the call.

Rosburg should be very familiar with these types of decisions and should be able to do a good job in aiding Hackett if or when this type of scenario comes up again.

The fact that Hackett made this hire two games into the season rather than as a 2023 offseason move is very smart. This team is in the win-now mindset and waiting to make this move while trying to learn on his own would not have been an ideal move of Hackett’s.
