Breaking down Denver Broncos 53-man roster transactions
2. Six cornerbacks were kept on the Denver Broncos roster
Like the wide receiver group, there are three in this group that was obviously not going anywhere. Now, who filled the cornerback room out was up in the air, ultimately the six the Denver Broncos decided to retain are:
- Patrick Surtain II
- Ronald Darby
- K’Wuan Williams
- Micheal Ojemudia
- Essang Bassey
- Damarri Mathis
That said, if there was one group that I expect to change, it would be this one. At least one cornerback will be claimed via the waiver wire or through free agency for sure.
Micheal Ojemudia will be heading to term injured reserve once all of this finalizes. Mike Purcell and Eric Tomlinson were veteran cuts that do not have to go through the waiver wire process, but the team will be bringing them back on as early as tomorrow.
Per Mike Klis, Mike Purcell will sign the new contract that will pay him $3.57 million and Eric Tomlinson will be signing a contract to make the original $1.435 that he was scheduled to earn. Great one-day sacrifices from these two players as they did what was best for the team.
Back to the original point, that will leave a spot open on the roster, ultimately for the Denver Broncos to add another cornerback to the room. Former Denver Broncos, Mac McCain III and Nate Hairston are among the group, while Tay Gowan and Justin Layne are another couple of intriguing targets.
There are still street-free agents also that the Denver Broncos could look to add if none of the aforementioned names ring your bell. Former Denver Bronco, Chris Harris Jr. is available as well as former George Paton draft pick, Xavier Rhodes.
Some reinforcements for this group make a ton of sense.
George Paton did mention that he thinks Damarri Mathis is ready to go if his name is called upon, some strong praise for the hard-nosed rookie.
