Denver Broncos roster fallers vs. Vikings: Essang Bassey, CB

Although Essang Bassey is getting singled out, I don’t know that any reserve cornerback really did enough to make the roster behind the top three guys. Damarri Mathis had some outstanding moments throughout training camp and his fourth-round draft status likely keeps his roster status in-tact despite not making much of a splash at all in the preseason.

Beyond Mathis? It’s really tough to know. Is Essang Bassey going to get the backup nickel role behind K’Waun Williams just because he’s the one on the roster with the most time on task in that position? Or will the Broncos keep Bassey initially and then move on after the final wave of cuts when they have a chance to make some claims on waivers? I think there’s no doubt they’re going to be pursuing cornerback depth with roster cuts coming up but I’m also not sure Bassey did enough to warrant being a sixth cornerback on this roster right away.

Denver Broncos roster fallers vs. Vikings: Jacob Bobenmoyer, Long Snapper

Over the last couple of weeks, the Broncos brought in a handful of long snappers (nine, actually) and nobody really knew exactly why. Well, after the preseason finale, we may have our answer. The long snapper is typically doing outstanding work when you really don’t hear much from them at all. Jacob Bobenmoyer had a bad snap on a field goal against the Vikings and he also had a huge gaffe on special teams when he tried to “down” a punt and took the ball right into the end zone for a touchback.

I think the Broncos will revisit those long snapper workouts from the last couple of weeks and replace Bobenmoyer before the start of the season. There are still a couple of weeks before the team’s debut against the Seahawks, and while that wait is brutal for the fans, it could be a blessing in disguise in terms of making last-minute roster adjustments like this.
