Do Denver Broncos have realistic shot at making Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl is the hardest trophy in sports to win. Do the Denver Broncos actually have a realistic chance to win the big game in 2022?
The impact that Russell Wilson has already made for the Denver Broncos is absurd. He has turned the franchise completely around and has rocketed the Broncos into the spotlight.
Given Russell Wilson’s success in his first 10 seasons in the NFL, it’s reasonable to think the Broncos will win double-digit games and make a playoff appearance.
While many in Broncos Country might be completely satisfied with that, how likely is it that the team can actually win the Super Bowl? Could the big game be in the cards this season?
Well, we know our quarterback won’t be the problem. He’s been to two Super Bowls and has a 9-7 playoff record.
We know that the Broncos have the most important positions in the modern-day NFL settled.
They’ve got an offensive line that works. They have their premier cornerback, along with edge rushers that can get to the quarterback, and they have adequate weapons.
Their roster is not the problem. It’s mostly set. I think Denver has a better roster than the Bengals did last year, and they made it to the Super Bowl.
I don’t think there are many reasonable upgrades the team could make to drastically improve their personnel, and I think teams have both gone to and won Super Bowls with lesser rosters.
The ownership isn’t going to have an impact on the team’s success this season, and I don’t think owners across the NFL can have a massive impact with their team’s on-field performance
George Paton has proven to be an excellent general manager thus far, and he’s shown an ability in the draft, free agency, and with trades.
I think if the Broncos need Paton to make some moves during the season for whatever reason, he’ll be able to do it to keep the team competitive.
To me, the biggest reason why winning the Super Bowl is unlikely this season is the coaching staff.
If you look at the past Super Bowl winners over the last decade or so, perhaps even longer, you’d see that the winning team’s head coaches had been in place for at least a few seasons.
Rarely do we see a first-year head coach win the Super Bowl. Gary Kubiak did it for the Broncos in 2015, but that was his second stint as a head coach.
I think Sean McVay, who made the Super Bowl in his second season, is a massive exception to the rule.
Nathaniel Hackett may end up being an excellent head coach, but I don’t anticipate he’ll be able to guide the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl this season.
