Which players did Broncos cut loose in first wave of roster cuts?

The Denver Broncos have made the decision to cut five players from the roster as NFL teams were forced to trim rosters from 90 players down to 85 on Tuesday.

Following the first preseason game, teams around the league had to release five players each. The Denver Broncos made those tough decisions on Tuesday, letting go of the following players.

The first order of business was to remove one player to make room for the incoming Joe Schobert, the linebacker the team signed on Monday following the news of Jonas Griffith’s injury.

That player ended up being Ben Braden. Though Braden did have some time with Nathaniel Hackett in Green Bay, he never had much of a chance to make this team. The team still had to part ways with five other players and those decisions came Tuesday, with four of them being on the offense.

Kaden Davis, Wide Receiver: Kaden Davis had become a fan favorite in training camp as he was the first player on the field for nearly every practice. He was given a chance to return a punt in the preseason opener vs. Dallas, but he was not targeted in the passing game.

It seemed sure that the Broncos would trim their wide receiving corps by at least one, but they actually decided to cut two.

Travis Fulgham, Wide Receiver: This may be seen as somewhat of a surprise, but the Broncos may actually be doing Fulgham a favor here in giving him a chance to catch on with another team and that could be the reason for the timing of his release.

The Broncos are seemingly loaded at the wide receiver position and the emergence of undrafted players Jalen Virgil and Brandon Johnson made it all but impossible for Fulgham to crack this squad.

Rodney Williams, Tight End: Rodney Williams seemed to have an athletic upside but the Broncos just have too much veteran presence in front of him at tight end on this roster and his talent was too raw to have a chance at making the squad.

Max Borghi, Running Back: This news will be disappointing to fans, but hometown favorite Max Borghi has been shown the door. He did get some run in the preseason opener but he was always a longshot to make the team. It is a bit surprising to see the team keep late additions Stevie Scott and JaQuan Hardy over him, however.

Jamar Johnson, Safety: Last year’s fifth-round pick, Jamar Johnson, was a player I identified as one having the most to prove against the Cowboys. He actually led the team with seven tackles that night, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on the roster.

He looked like a good find coming out of college and was taken just 12 picks later than fellow safety Caden Sterns, who looks like a steal. Hopefully, he can catch on with a new team and get another shot.

The Broncos will go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills this Saturday. Following that game, the team will have until next Tuesday to cut five more players.
