Mistakes Denver Broncos must avoid in the 2022 season

Playing silly games with Wilson’s future contract extension

A lot of teams will play hardball when it comes to negotiating contract extensions for their players.

Roquan Smith, an All-Pro linebacker and one of the best at his position, requested a trade from the Bears recently because of a contract dispute.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens seem unable to come to an agreement, and with Jackson not wanting to continue the talks when week one hits, the Ravens are potentially making a massive mistake.

Another example is what the Cowboys did in not being able to re-sign Randy Gregory, when they essentially had the deal already done before Gregory jumped to the Denver Broncos.

This doesn’t just pertain to quarterbacks, but quarterback is the single most important position in the history of sports, and the Denver Broncos have an elite one.

I know it isn’t always this simple, but if Russell Wilson wants a four-year extension next offseason that pays him $50 million per year, then I think the Broncos should simply say “Yes sir, sign here.”

The cap is, for the most part, complex, so a future extension that Russell Wilson signs will likely come with a ton of moving parts to make it team friendly, but when the rubber meets the road, I would hope that the Denver Broncos pony up the money that is needed to keep Russell Wilson happy for years to come in Denver.
