Three reasons Denver Broncos should trade for Roquan Smith: Broncos ILB group is weakest position group on the team

I’m not saying that the Denver Broncos inside linebacking group is bad–both Josey Jewell and Jonas Griffith are talented, but overall, it’s by far the weakest position group on the roster, especially on defense.

If the Broncos want to continue to boast an elite defense, upgrading what they have at ILB might be the move.

Also, the depth is a bit questionable behind Jewell and Griffith, who are the projected starters.

Josey Jewell is a more old school linebacker who missed most of 2021 with a torn pectoral, and Jonas Griffith is a hyper athletic linebacker who made the most of his limited opportunities in 2021.

If the team runs through 2022 with these two, I really don’t think it’ll end up being a glaring weakness that holds the defense back, but I do think it’s a clear position to upgrade.

If the Broncos want to show Russell Wilson and the rest of the NFL how serious they are about trying to win Super Bowls, trading for Roquan Smith to upgrade a weaker group makes a ton of sense.

The deal would likely have to include either Jewell or Griffith, but I think if the team can only give up one player plus some draft picks, that’s a small price to pay for an elite player.
