Denver Broncos training camp Day 10 standout no. 3: Brandon Johnson, WR

Another day, another young Denver Broncos wide receiver out there making an impression.

After the Tim Patrick injury, many wondered if the Broncos were going to have to look for help outside their own roster at receiver, and to this point, they’ve only made one modest move to sign free agent tryout Darrius Shepherd.

On Day 10 of training camp, one Denver Broncos receiver that stood out (among a handful) was rookie free agent Brandon Johnson.

Johnson hasn’t gotten a ton of hype this offseason but it’s certainly been growing over the last handful of weeks.

In a move-the-ball period, Johnson came up with a big play while working with the first-team offense and quarterback Russell Wilson.

It’s not uncommon for young receivers to get rotated in with the top offense at training camp.

It’s certainly not uncommon in this context, given how many receivers have been on the mend for the Broncos throughout camp (although Kendall Hinton was suited up at this practice; the Broncos are still missing Tyrie Cleveland out there with a throat injury).

Even if it’s not uncommon to throw young receivers out there, it’s also not uncommon for a young receiver like this to continually be making plays with the top offense when given the opportunity.

Some things that are worth repeating and worth noting:

  • Johnson is from the same high school as Pat Surtain II
  • Johnson was recruited to play at Tennessee by current Broncos WR coach Zach Azzanni
  • Johnson was one of just a couple young receivers on the roster invited to Russell Wilson’s San Diego complex

Johnson’s got a lot going for him right now.

If Russell Wilson has any say in the 53-man roster construction — and as far as receivers are concerned, you would think that he would — Johnson might have a better shot than we anticipated.
