Just how good are Sutton and Patrick’s contracts for the Broncos?

Both Tim Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick were extended by the Denver Broncos in 2021, and their contracts and proving to be massive bargains.

Both Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick were given contract extensions in 2021, tying them into Denver for years to come.

General Manager George Paton did an excellent job getting both under contract for much less than they each would have received if they had hit free agency.

With the plethora of wide receiver deals being handed out this offseason, it’s clear just how much of a bargain both Sutton and Patrick are playing for.

Now, it is entirely possible that someone like Courtland Sutton asks for a new contract if he has a strong 2022 season, and he’d have absolutely every right to do so.

With Tim Patrick now out for the season with a torn ACL, his current contract in Denver isn’t likely to be extended on for more money in terms of average annual value, but anything could happen.

So, let’s start with some numbers.

There are currently 14 wide receivers in the NFL who are playing on a contract that pays them at least $20 million per year, and five of them are getting $25 million per year or more.

Sutton’s contract with the Denver Broncos has a $15 million AAV, which ranks 25th in the NFL.

This is an amazing bargain for a player likely to cement himself as a top 10-15 wide receiver in the NFL this season.  Let’s not forget that Sutton enjoyed an over 1,100-yard season in 2019, earning a Pro Bowl while catching passes from Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, and a rookie Drew Lock.

With Patrick out for the season, Sutton is likely to get a larger target share, so I would not at all be surprised if Sutton could creep up to the 1,500-yard mark in 2022.

Tim Patrick’s contract is paying him $10 million per year, which ranks 37th  in the NFL, once again, proving that it’s a bargain.

Lesser receivers like DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, and Curtis Samuel are all getting more money.

Playing together, both Sutton and Patrick are one of the stronger duos in the NFL.  With Patrick out for the season, eyes will be glued to the duo of Sutton and Jerry Jeudy,.

Obviously, the receivers that are getting the big bucks are indeed better players than the Broncos’ duo, but is Tyreek Hill twice as good as Courtland Sutton?  Hill is making twice what Sutton makes, and I don’t think Hill is twice as better.

With these massive receiver deals being handed out, and seeing how much more important receivers are becoming in the NFL, these deals are going to keep rising and rising.

Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick are both on bargain contracts and both should outperform their respective deals at some point for the Denver Broncos.
