Denver Broncos player no. 3: Montrell Washington, WR/RS

Coming into training camp, the Denver Broncos placed third-year player KJ Hamler on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list despite the fact that he had a great offseason of work.

As quickly as Hamler has gotten back to what appears to be full strength or close to it, he’s going to be taking things slow at the start of training camp, which has opened up opportunities for other players.

One of the players taking advantage early on is fifth-round pick Montrell Washington, a rookie out of Samford.

Washington has been really impressing everyone watching with his quickness in the return game, which is obviously what the Denver Broncos drafted him to do first and foremost.

With that being said, Russell Wilson has a history of helping players with a lack of draft status have success in the NFL and Washington could be the latest.

When news of KJ Hamler going on the PUP emerged, it seemed like it might not be a bad idea for the Broncos to go out and perhaps sign a veteran receiver as some insurance.

That still may not be the worst idea, but for the time being, Montrell Washington is filling in capably.

He’s not the only receiver working in with the top unit, but he’s certainly making one of the biggest impressions, whether he’s on the field to return punts or play on offense.

Could Washington’s role in 2022 be much bigger than originally anticipated?

The Broncos won’t put on the pads until Tuesday, but four practices in, it seems like his role could end up being much bigger than just being thrown out there on 4th down when the opposing team is punting.

Washington is showing off his natural playmaking abilities rather quickly.
