Denver Broncos flying under the radar: Damarri Mathis, CB
Damarri Mathis, the cornerback out of Pittsburgh, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in this past draft, going 115th overall in the 4th round.
The three-star corner appeared in 34 games at Pitt, totaling 86 tackles, five interceptions, and 18 pass deflections.
Despite his small 5’11” frame, he plays a physical game, often disrupting routes and securing tackles with good fundamentals.
The biggest knock on the 23-year-old is covering deep routes with lackluster recovery speed, however, Mathis is a complete ball hawk in short to medium field situations.
Last season Denver struggled at times in the secondary with the injury bug running its course. Despite the electric play of rookie Patrick Surtain II, the rest of the cornerbacks were pretty blah, which was shown with Surtain II being the only Denver Bronco corner with an interception on the season.
Mathis not only helps beef up the secondary depth but can be an impactful player from day 1 if he can bring his physical play from Pitt to Denver.
