Broncos’ best-kept secrets: Mike Boone, Running back

The Broncos have a solid running back combination in Williams and Melvin Gordon, but at some point, the team will need a third back to come in and make some plays. There is no reason why that can’t be Mike Boone.

Boone had a fairly quiet debut season with the Broncos as he was slowed down by injuries, but he stepped up and played well when his number was called with the Minnesota Vikings. He ran for 273 yards and three touchdowns in limited action in 2019 and for his career, he averages 5.5 yards per carry.

Boone is a special teams guy and that was one of the main reasons he was brought to Denver. His signing signaled the end for hometown favorite Phillip Lindsay. But this is the year that Boone needs to be added to the rushing attack in Denver.

Nathaniel Hackett had two good backs to work with in Green Bay with Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. Other running backs combined for just 33 total carries last season, so it’s quite possible that Boone will see limited action in this offense as well.

But if Williams or Gordon is to ever be hobbled by injury, Boone will be a player the team can count on to step up and make something happen.
