Broncos’ best-kept secrets: Blessuan Austin, Cornerback

Blessuan Austin is a real under-the-radar guy for the team as he is a guy the Broncos added him just before this year’s NFL draft. A former sixth-round pick of the New York Jets, the Broncos will be the third team for Austin.

When you look at Austin, what immediately stands out is his size and length. He is the prototypical defensive back in the NFL from a physical standpoint. He can play special teams as well and has nearly 100 tackles for his career.

The Broncos have Surtain and Ronald Darby on the roster to go with free-agent signing K’Wuan Williams, fourth-round pick Damarri Mathis and Michael Ojemudia. Assuming all of those players make the team, Austin will find it tough to crack the 53-man roster.

But it’s not impossible. He could be kept as a sixth corner and he could even beat out a guy like Ojemudia, who missed nearly all of last season.

Austin is a guy on the back end of the roster who almost no one has talked about, but he has the size, he has the experience and he has the ability to be a force on special teams and a good fit in Ejiro Evero’s defensive scheme.

Keep an eye on Austin over the next several weeks.
