The Denver Broncos have a solidified duo at the top of their running back position, but what about the depth behind Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon?

Heading into 2022 training camp, the Denver Broncos have to be a little giddy over the state of their running back position.

Javonte Williams is coming off of an exciting rookie year and looks poised to become one of the 10 best backs in the NFL if he’s not already.

Melvin Gordon is back at a discounted rate after scoring 20 touchdowns in his first two years with the Broncos.

The running back position looks good at the top for the Denver Broncos, but what about the guys behind Williams and Gordon?

Hopefully, we won’t have to see too much of them this season, but it would be foolish not to expect at least a few dings and bruises along the way for one of the game’s most difficult positions to stay healthy.

How good can this position group be? Will there be a surprise contributor making noise in training camp?

Denver Broncos RB preview: The top of the depth chart

Heading into his second NFL season, everybody expects Javonte Williams to improve upon his rookie year in which he racked up over 1,200 yards from scrimmage with seven total touchdowns.

Williams was an Angry Runs favorite and brought to the Denver Broncos exactly what made him so beloved coming out of North Carolina — the ability to break tackles.

In year two, he’s expected to be the RB1a along with the veteran Melvin Gordon, who isn’t going to just sit back and watch Williams take all the touches.

Gordon had a pretty strong 2021 campaign in his own right and doesn’t appear to be slowing down much at all. He’s averaged over 4.5 yards per carry since coming to Denver and flashed some big-time speed early last season on a long touchdown run.

The Broncos don’t need to worry about the top of the depth chart at this position.
