7 Denver Broncos questions heading into training camp 2022
3. Will Dre’Mont Jones get an extension during training camp/preseason?
This is something I’m really going to be looking forward to.
Whenever we hear from George Paton, I hope he gets asked about an update regarding Dre’Mont Jones’ contract status.
Back in the 2015 offseason, the Denver Broncos had the opportunity to re-sign Malik Jackson to a contract that was well below a market-value deal.
Unfortunately, he was never extended an offer, and the Broncos lost him in 2016 free agency after his price tag skyrocketed following a dominant playoff run and touchdown in Super Bowl 50.
John Elway didn’t really like to talk contracts with players during training camp, but does George Paton share that same philosophy? This is only his second camp, but if there’s any player deserving of a new deal here before the 2022 season, it’s Dre’Mont Jones.
The 2019 third-round pick has gotten better consistently.
He’s been a force against the run and as a pass rusher.
He’s become one of the most well-rounded defenders on the team and the Denver Broncos traded away their other top defensive lineman — Shelby Harris — in the Russell Wilson trade.
Jones’ presence on the defensive line is crucial, and because of Bradley Chubb’s contract situation, you want to keep the franchise tag open if at all possible.
All signs seem to point to a deal getting done for Dre’Mont Jones at some point during the season or even before the season.
And why not before the season?
