#5 Denver Broncos player in Madden 23: Cornerback Patrick Surtain, Madden 23 rating: 83 overall

I won’t necessarily go as far as saying Patrick Surtain is being overlooked by the Madden rating people, but it’s getting pretty darn close to that. Surtain had an outstanding rookie season in 2021 and I can’t wait until EA takes note and gives him an upper-80s rating.

Surtain shut down several big-name receivers as a rookie. His focus was incredible when it had to be.

A big help in doing so is due to his speed. Surtain ran the fastest speed of any ball carrier returning an interception for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers last season over the last five seasons: 22.07 miles per hour.

Surtain had tremendous vision while lined up against some of the league’s top receivers. In Madden 23, he was given a man coverage rating of 84 and a zone coverage rating of 80.

In real life, it will be fun to see what new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero asks of Surtain II. He’ll get a chance to increase both of those coverage ratings throughout the season.

Like Simmons, Surtain has an awesome jump rating. He was given a 92. He has a tremendous ability to jump routes and pick off the ball. Hopefully, we see some more Champ Bailey-style plays from him throughout his career.

His tackle rating is not great, as EA gave him a 64. To be fair, however, one of the best cornerbacks in the league, Jalen Ramsay, was given a tackling rating of 75 overall. Ultimately, it’s not something to really complain about.

If the best tackling cornerback in the league was given a rating in the 90s, then sure, we could have said something more here.
