This was just a terrible pick by the Broncos but one the organization deserves the blame for.

Paul Toviessi was a terrific college player for the Thundering Herd, but he came with a major injury concern after missing an entire college season due to a knee issue. Shahanan and the Broncos chose to take the risk anyway and they paid for it.

Less than two weeks after signing his first contract with the team, Toviessi had those knee issues pop up in training camp and he went on injured reserve. Initially, it looked like a short recovery time and it looked as though he would be ready to play before he 2001 season kicked off.

Instead, he would require micro-fracture surgery, one of three knee surgeries he would undergo in under a year. The Broncos ended up getting tired of waiting for Toviessi, a player they traded up for in the draft, and they cut him before the 2002 season.

He never played in a single game for the Broncos and ultimately, never played a down in the NFL. Yet only 50 players were selected ahead of him in 2001.
