Denver Broncos second-year player Baron Browning is getting a massive opportunity with the recent report on Randy Gregory’s status.

With training camp less than two weeks away (believe it or not), the Denver Broncos know they will be without big-money free agent pass rusher Randy Gregory.

According to a recent report from Mike Klis, Gregory has progressed well from a shoulder procedure earlier this offseason, but the Denver Broncos want to allow him as much time as possible to heal.

As Klis put it, the Broncos would rather Gregory be at full speed by the time they take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 rather than get to see him take reps against the Cowboys’ backups in preseason play.

There’s really no good reason to rush Gregory back, especially with so many other players on the roster that could benefit from the additional reps.

One player that stands to benefit in a big way?

Although there’s no question that everyone would rather have a fully healthy Randy Gregory out there on the field and not have to think about any injuries heading into the season, it’s impossible to ignore the chance Baron Browning has before him.

The Broncos moved him to the edge this offseason in hopes that they could unlock his immense potential at a premium position.

We’ll see what happens as the offseason progresses, but I tend to believe that Browning isn’t going to be a rotational player so much as he is a dynamic chess piece for the Denver Broncos defense.

He has proven what he can do as an off-ball linebacker. We saw flashes at Ohio State of what he can do as primarily an edge player.

Now, we’ll get to see what plans Ejiro Evero has for him as a full-time edge player in the NFL.

Throughout the course of training camp and the preseason, Browning will almost undoubtedly get a bunch of reps with the top defense in Gregory’s stead.

He might be splitting with the likes of Malik Reed or the team’s top pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Nik Bonitto, but Browning is certainly going to get a chance to prove what he can do with the 1s.

Browning is one of the freakiest athletes on the team and Mike Klis also reported that he’s getting used to an additional 10 pounds on his frame this year now that he will be playing that full-time edge position.

Browning is listed on the Denver Broncos’ official site as 240 pounds so it’s reasonable to assume based on Klis’ information that he’s now all the way up to 250.

He was 245 at the NFL Combine when he absolutely blew up his workout, so there’s no need to worry about this affecting his speed or explosiveness.

Heading into the 2022 training camp/preseason period, Browning is one of the players defensively that should have Broncos fans giddy. He’s not very proven at this point, but he’s undoubtedly one of the team’s most exciting athletes and playmakers on that side of the ball.

With Randy Gregory on the mend, we might get a glimpse of just how special he can be.
