Denver Broncos-Minnesota Vikings trade no. 1: Cam Dantzler to Denver

As we head into training camp, I think the Denver Broncos have plenty of intriguing players to watch at the cornerback position.

Unfortunately, not all of them are battle-tested. That’s not exactly a requirement when it comes to assembling a cornerback group, but how many years now have we seen the Denver Broncos cycle through almost the entire depth chart at the position?

The Minnesota Vikings know the value of a good secondary as well, and new general manager Kwesi-Adofo Mensah has made that an absolute priority in his first year on the job, using his top two picks on the secondary and investing there in free agency as well.

Dantzler is now going to be in a battle for a starting job with Andrew Booth Jr. which doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to be on the trade block, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Dantzler was a third-round pick in George Paton’s final draft with the Vikings in 2020, and it stands to reason that he might still like him as a prospect quite a bit.

But would the Broncos actually be motivated to make a deal like this? Why not?

The primary area in the secondary where the Denver Broncos need some proven depth right now is on the outside.

Imagine, for a moment, if one of Pat Surtain II or Ronald Darby goes down with an injury. Michael Ojemudia would be first in line to replace them but additional depth is needed.

If the Vikings’ new regime decides they are set in the secondary even without Dantzler in the fold, they could get something of value from the Broncos perhaps in a player-for-player kind of deal.

The Broncos have plenty of depth at safety, off the edge, at receiver, and even at tight end that the Vikings could have interest in. Perhaps on the offensive line as well.

Given George Paton’s history in Minnesota, anyone that the Vikings drafted while he was in the front office there is an intriguing possibility as we look forward to potential trades to upgrade this Denver Broncos roster.
