Messiest divorces in Broncos history: Trading Jay Cutler

Shortly after the hiring of McDaniels, rumors began to swirl that the new head coach was looking to trade the team’s star quarterback, Jay Cutler.

The Broncos had used a first-round pick to select Cutler just three years prior but reports began to come out that McDaniels wanted to get one of the quarterbacks from his Patriots days, Matt Cassel.

Cutler began to publicly criticize the coach and said he had lost trust in the organization. That led to a trade that did not net Cassel but instead, brought the Broncos Kyle Orton at quarterback in a package with the Chicago Bears.

Cutler left the Bears as the team’s all-time leader in passing yardage and touchdown passes while Orton lasted less than three seasons as the Broncos’ starter, eventually losing his job to Tim Tebow.
