Messiest divorces in Broncos history: The debacle of Josh McDaniels as head coach

Following the departure of Mike Shanahan as head coach, the Broncos hired the hottest young name on the coaching market at the time, Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels was just 32 years old at the time and looked fresh and ready for his first opportunity after helping the New England Patriots reach great success as their offensive coordinator.

He got off to an impressive 6-0 start in Denver and even those fans who hated the hiring initially were on board. The team looked as good as it had in quite some time.

But that came crashing down in a major way.

The Broncos would lose eight of their next 10 games and miss the playoffs. But the worst was yet to come.

The following season, McDaniels was caught in an illegal videotape situation, similar to the one the Patriots had gotten involved in years before. Because the team improperly videotaped a walk-through practice of the San Francisco 49ers ahead of their game and McDaniels failed to report it, the Broncos decided to move on from the coach.

McDaniels was fired during the 2010 season with a record at the time of 3-9. He became just the second coach in team history to be fired during the season, joining Jack Faulkner from the team’s AFL days all the way back in 1964.

McDaniels will now be back as a head coach for the first time since all of this happened, now coaching the rival Las Vegas Raiders.

But McDaniels had his hand in another separation within the organization.
