Difficult roster decision for Broncos No. 3: Cornerback

In today’s passing league, teams like to load up on cornerbacks so it should be expected that the Broncos keep at least six of them on the 53-man roster. But who will fill those slots?

I see four locks.

Patrick Surtain, Ronald Darby, K’Waun Williams and rookie Damarri Mathis. That leaves a couple of slots up for grabs and the favorite to land one of those will be Michael Ojemudia. The former third-round pick will have something to prove ahead of this season as he’s become almost forgotten on this team after missing nearly all of last season.

The team also has seventh-round pick Faion Hicks, who should compete for a spot as a special teams guy but there are those who are high on Bless Austin as well.

Former undrafted player Essang Bassey will figure into the decision process as well. It would be tough to cut him and I would personally like to see him perform at a high enough level that he is kept around due to his upside. But if he were to be cut, the Broncos would likely love to sneak him onto the practice squad if he were able to clear waivers.
