Difficult roster decision for Broncos No. 2: Safety

The Broncos have a great starting combination at safety in Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson, but how will they build behind those two with the options they have?

Caden Sterns is a second-year player with star potential and will be a lock to make the roster. But all bets will be off beyond that. The rest of the depth chart at safety looks like this:

  • Jamar Johnson
  • Delarrin Turner-Yell
  • J.R. Reed
  • P.J. Locke

That makes things quite interesting because all of those guys are not going to make the team. The Broncos will have to part with at least one player that they have made an investment in, depending on how many safeties they choose to keep.

Johnson was a fifth-round pick last year but seems to be coming along slowly in his development. He might be considered a long shot to make this team.

Turner-Yell was a fifth-round pick in the most recent draft and the team will probably want to keep him on the roster to see how he can fit into the future. But Reed was signed as a free agent and that was done with a plan in mind as well.

Then you have Locke, who is one of the better special teams players on the roster.

This is going to be one of the more interesting position groups to keep an eye on and performances in camp and preseason games will mean everything to these players.
