Broncos’ most interesting position battles ahead of training camp: Punter

What, punter? Yes.

The backup quarterback battle between Josh Johnson and Brett Rypien could have been put here but as long as Wilson is healthy, neither of those guys will ever see a snap, so it’s not that interesting.

But there is a battle brewing at punter that seemingly no one is talking about.

Sam Martin is the starter and for good reason. The nine-year veteran is averaging about 47 yards per punt in his two seasons with the Broncos, but a guy by the name of Corliss Waitman is also on the roster.

The Broncos scooped Waitman up off waivers back in January when he was let go by the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he could outperform Martin this summer, the team could opt to keep him and save some money.

Martin is scheduled to make $2.25 million this season while Waitman’s contract is set to pay him $825,000. That could be a decent savings for George Paton and that could be why Waitman was brought aboard.
