Hugh Millen was the backup to Elway in 1994 and 1995 but in the ’94 season, he actually had to make two starts for the team with Elway hobbled.
Millen was the definition of a journeyman, having played with five other teams before coming to Denver. But he did come with some experience, starting 20 games for the New England Patriots in his time there.
He was plugged in toward the tail end of the 1994 season, a 7-9 campaign for the Broncos. In total, he played in eight games for the team, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Following the 1995 season, he signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent but he failed to make the team that year. That was his final season in the league.
His time in Denver is easily forgotten as the Broncos were in the middle of a transitional period, moving to head coach Mike Shanahan in 1995. Of course, the team really began a solid run the following year that would lead to Elway getting his first Super Bowl win.
