Melvin Gordon might be a backup this year but has been another uber-consistent force for the Denver Broncos.
I was not a fan of the team re-signing Melvin Gordon at all. I think Javonte Williams should be the clear cut, RB1 for this team, and also think the team should stop with the 1a, 1b nonsense.
However, what Melvin Gordon brings to the table is something that very few running backs can do, and have been able to do for the period of time that Gordon has done it.
Melvin Gordon, even before he came to the Broncos, was a consistently above-average player. In fact, since 2016, he is third in the NFL in rush yards, behind two future Hall of Famers in Ezekiel Elliott and Derrick Henry.
In his two years in Denver, Gordon has accumulated 1,904 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 2,275 yards from scrimmage.
Even when the Broncos’ offense seemed lost, Gordon was able to still put out a competent product for the team.
Nothing might sound exciting about paying a 29-year-old running back, but late in the season when opponents are tired, having both Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams in the backfield is going to be a headache for defenses.
Gordon has never ‘wowed’ in the stat sheet, but he’s been a consistent force for years.
